At long last!
I (with much help from Zaubi, especially when it came to recursing through directories) have finished the insane Perl script that has been my project for the past week as I went from no knowledge of Perl to much knowledge of Perl. And CGI and JavaScript, en route.
The long and short of it is, our Taiwan pictures are now up and posted. I didn’t put them up before because I wanted the script to nicely automate them into webpages and create the form and so forth so that I can edit the captions from a nice web interface instead of manually… There are too damn many to do that shit by hand.
Today I upgraded my server to Apache 2 and fixed it to work with PHP and Postnuke. It was surprisingly easy, given how perfinicky it was last year with older Apache, PHP, and Postnuke. I don’t know any PHP but I think I’ll learn. I like to amuse myself that way. I’ve had more fun in the past week scripting Perl than doing almost anything else (maybe that is because I was sick in bed for most of it, but maybe I am just a super dork?)
You guys really aren’t interested in hearing about this, are you.
Anyway, check out the photos! Some a little risqué… :-p well, only one or two; I censored heavily
those are AWESOME! I looked through all of them – you’re a very talented photographer!
scripting languages
I’ve enjoyed using Python, and found PHP to be *very* nice for making dynamic web pages. I’ve always had negative experiences with Perl, but many other people seem to like it. Ruby is supposed to be good too, and preferred by the old Smalltalk crowd (whereas Python seems popular with the old Lisp crowd). My PHP experience is limited to hacking on this web photo album software, which is reasonably decent (but requires a MySQL back end):
